Simple Past Tense
This is the
verb tense to apply when you whish to talk about the past – about an action
which has already happened/completed. That action should no longer be going on
in the current moment.
·
I
talked to mom on the phone.
·
She
cooked rice for lunch.
Notice how the verbs talk and cook have changed. They
each have an ed added to the end. In past tense, verbs change as such,
to indicate that the action is complete and not happening currently.
She cooked rice for lunch – something which
has been done before. She is not cooking now.
According to how verbs change, there are 2 verb categories – regular
and irregular verbs. But let us keep that for later.
Sentence Structure
For all the subjects, no matter singular or plural, the structure
is the same:
Subject + Verb (Past form) + Object
·
He walked
to school.
·
Aisha
loved noodles as a kid.
·
They
missed their mother.
· Ali and Ahmed brushed their teeth.
Regular & Irregular Verbs
Regular verbs are those which ends with -ed,
when written in their past forms.
Examples: Talked, Walked, Voted,
Missed, Cooked, Washed
Irregular verbs however, are very different.
·
Some verbs will not even look like their original
form.
Go – Went
· She went to bed very late.
·
Some verbs will have a little difference from their
original form.
Know – Knew Drive – Drove Swim – swam
·
She knew all the
answers.
There are no specific reasons why verbs end irregularly. What we have to
do is learn them and practice as much as possible.
To help you with that, here is a list of irregular verbs, along with their first forms. Learn well!
